Abstract
Mg ~2~ SiO ~4~ and Mg ~2~ GeO ~4~ form a continuous series of solid solutions. The melting behavior is of the Roozeboom type I. Similarity of melting point and latent heat of melting are indicative of the close thermochemical and structural relationship between the two end members. Attempts to prepare the spinel polymorph of Mg ~2~ GeO ~4~ described by Goldschmidt were unsuccessful. It seems likely that the spinel modification is monotropic and is formed only under specialized and restricted conditions.
