Abstract
A short eruption high on the southwest rift on May 19 was followed on May 21 by lava fountaining and extrusion between 6,500 and 7,500 ft. The eruption fissures opened progressively uphill. The first flow moved southeast and, on the 22nd, a second flow moved southwestward. The eruption was accompanied by many earthquakes and by an increase in the lava level in Halemaumau; shortly thereafter, the lava lake subsided. The eruption was expected. Jaggar regards a short period of exceptionally numerous earthquakes in September 1915 as due to magma rising in Mauna Loa fissures, splitting its way upward, and attaining release of gas pressure in some unobserved intrusion or submarine eruption. The sympathetic activity of Mauna Loa and Kilauea leaves little doubt that they are connected as correlated gas vents and not as hydrostatic siphon tubes. Jaggar describes in detail seismic activity in 1915 and 1916, taken from HVO Bulletins (Bevens and others, 1988). He has an excellent description of an aa flow advancing in surges, overriding earlier, cooled fronts. He estimates the maximum flow rate to be 8 km/hr. The paper includes a sketch map of the lava.
