Abstract
Methods used for the determination of organic carbon and nitrogen in thirty-eight sediments from the northern Red Sea are described and the results of analysis are given. The distribution of organic matter in these sediments is discussed. The following points are revealed by the present investigation. 1. The organic matter content of the northern Red Sea sediments is very small. 2. The C:N ratio, which amounts to 5.2, is low. 3. Both the organic matter content and the C:N ratio exhibit regional variations which are ascribed to different environmental conditions of sedimentation. 4. The mean C:N ratio for these sediments is in close agreement with the proportion of these elements in mixed plankton.
