Abstract
Silicified surface rocks described (with chemical analyses) from various Australian localities include silcretes, cemented eolian sands, and material indurated below basalt flows and subsequently exhumed (sub-basaltic quartzites). The rocks were found to contain chalcedony, opal, and authigenic quartz, all of which tended to corrode or invade clastic quartz. The origin, composition, and direction of movement of the solutions responsible for silicification are discussed.
