Abstract
The four rock groups of the Lewisian basement complex of the Gairloch district were subjected to widespread crushing and shearing during the Laxfordian orogeny and contain a variety of crush veins, many of which extend into the wall rock and some of which carry relic glass and spherulites, indicating that the vein material was melted at the time of intrusion. Although recrystallization and devitrification have obscured much of the evidence, true pseudotachylite, together with ultramylonite, is definitely present in the Gairloch crush rocks.
