Abstract
Powers describes the surface ash deposits of Kilauea. He separates them into an older series overlain by deposits of the 1790 explosive eruption. The older series is represented by a layer of ash 17+ ft thick at the foot of the cliff at the southwest side of Uwekahuna Bluff and a thinner layer overlying an unconformity at the northeast side of Uwekahuna Bluff. The older series may predate the caldera. Powers gives an account of 1790 activity taken from Dibble (1843). He speculates that the source for the 1790 eruption may have been Cone Crater on the upper southwest rift, rather than Halemaumau. He infers that Kilauea caldera is older than the 1790 ash deposits and has formed gradually. The basal part of the Keanakakoi ash, a layer of thread-lace scoria (reticulite), is of prehistoric age and perhaps predates the caldera. This layer is a separate eruptive deposit not associated with the lava directly beneath, in disagreement with conclusions reached by Perret (1913e). Powers briefly describes other ash deposits, including those associated with Mauna Kea cinder cones and Pahala ash.
