Abstract
"The chemical solution of microscopic sulphide grains from the recent sediments of Christchurch harbour, Hampshire, has revealed the presence of supposed organic structures bearing great similarities to those previously described from fossil sediments. The forms of the sulphide and the residual structures are described and the identification of the mineral as pyrite is recorded. Although the exact nature of the supposed pyrite-forming organism is still in doubt, it is suggested that it is saprophytic and invades its host soon after death or deposition. The formation of the sulphide rapidly follows. The distribution of the pyrite is shown to be related to the nature of the sediment, being found in those rich in clay and organic matter."
