Abstract
Emerson reports early laboratory experiments in which samples of both aa and pahoehoe were powdered and fused in a crucible, the melt being stirred as it cooled. The cavity left by stirring was in each case found to be lined with aa. He concludes from the experimental results that aa forms by mechanical stirring of the lava while the flow is in motion. Emerson gives good descriptions of aa forming on steep slopes and aa emerging from the sides of Mauna Iki. He concludes from the combination of experimental results and field observation that the critical factors governing the formation of aa or pahoehoe are essentially mechanical, related to thickness and viscosity of the flow, and viscosity of the liquid at the time of crystallization.
