Abstract
It is difficult to reach any definite conclusion regarding the origin of volcanic heat, mainly because of the conflicting character of the evidence. . . . Magmas may be formed at various levels in the mantle and in the crust, and a theory of 9statistical9 melting is presented as a new line of investigation. Magmas are believed to have several 9parents,9 one of which may be diffusion of water and less common metallic constituents from the core of the earth.
