Abstract
Reviews existing theories of the origin of winding valleys and advances the hypothesis that valley bends represent meanders of streams whose discharge was formerly much greater than at present due to considerably higher rainfall during the Pleistocene. Experimental evidence relating to the formation of stream meanders and field observations in six valleys of central and southern England are summarized, and an extensive bibliography is appended.
