Abstract
Formation of aluminosilicate minerals--"reverse weathering"--is a major process accounting for over half the alkalinity deficit in the mass balance. The process does not go to completion, however, and alkaline (pH >9) Na-HCO 3 , Cl waters result. Suggested that the reason such reactions are not important in the oceans is that the maintenance of a relatively low pH by ridge-crest hydrothermal processes in fact precludes their occurrence.--Modified journal abstract.
