Abstract
Becker estimates, on the basis of Coan9s accounts, that the 1840 lava flow from Kilauea advanced at a rate of 22 ft/min. He computes that the lava had a viscosity 60 times that of water, assuming a density for liquid lava of 2.5 times that of water. He discusses magmatic differentiation in terms of processes of segregation, including molecular diffusion and liquid immiscibility, and describes the process of partial melting and removal of melt due to its lower density. The author postulates mixing of magmas in pipes or fissures, which are at least temporarily superheated due to decrease in pressure, although he concludes that lavas at the surface are not superheated. He describes convection in dikes and concentration of less fusible constituents on the walls.
