Abstract
A theoretical discussion of the compressive deformation of a competent bed (ptygmatic vein) in an incompetent host rock. Equations relating initial wave length, thickness of the competent layer, and viscosity of the two beds are derived. An equation estimating the depth of penetration of the contact strain into the incompetent bed is given which agrees well with experimental work.
