Abstract
Analyses of the gaseous constituents of Hawaiian lava are arranged in order of abundance of each gas. Progressing from poor to good collections, it is found that H ~2~ O, SO ~3~ , and Cl decrease, while CO ~2~ , CO, SO ~2~ , S ~2~ , H ~2~ , N ~2~ , and A increase. Jaggar states that in a perfect collection uncontaminated by atmospheric gases, the first three gases would be absent. Study of gases liberated by reheating rocks in vacuum suggests that N ~2~ and S are minor constituents at depth. Jaggar believes that the H ~2~ O present in collections is generated by the reaction H ~2~ + CO ~2~ = CO + H ~2~ O + 10,000 calories. The large amount of H ~2~ O produced by this reaction implies a much greater abundance of H ~2~ at depth, which is consistent with the larger amounts of H ~2~ yielded by reheating solidified rocks. The magmatic gases at depth are believed to be largely H ~2~ and CO ~2~ , in approximately equal amounts, with less N ~2~ , and the other gases in small volume.
