Abstract
The median value of silica for ground water is 17 ppm, for streams 14 ppm, and for lake and ocean waters or water recently derived from rain or snow less than 3 ppm. Rock type is the principal factor controlling the silica content of ground water. The total quantity of silica exported in solution by streams is related directly to the amount of runoff, suggesting that climate may not necessarily exert a control on the rate of removal.
