Abstract
Statistical analysis indicates that the total SiO 2 content of the magma is the major control of the Si to Al ratio of the clinopyroxenes crystallizing from the magma. The correlation is a direct result of Al replacing Si in tetrahedral sites. Charge neutrality is maintained by the entrance of Ti, Al, and Fe (super 3+) in octahedral sites. Clinopyroxenes from oversaturated tholeiitic magmas have a high Si to Al ratio, while those from undersaturated alkali basalt have low Si to Al ratios. During magmatic fractionation the Si to Al ratio of the clinopyroxenes increases as the magma becomes progressively more siliceous. Temperature effects are considered subordinate to magma compositional control.
