Abstract
In addition to the usual physical laws of hydraulics, other influences are operative, which account for quasi-equilibrium states in the observed form of stream channels. These states represent the most probable state between two opposing tendencies--toward minimum total rate of work in the whole fluvial system and toward uniform distribution of energy expenditure throughout the system. Aspects of several types of fluvial systems are discussed in terms of these principles.
