Abstract
Presentamos en este trabajo algunos rasgos fundamentales que caracterizan el ritual funerario tradicional en Iparralde. Los datos fueron recogidos durante un trabajo de investigación «beca J.M. de Barandiarán, 1987». En este trabajo se han elegido y discutido tres grandes temas: 1) La muerte y la vecindad, el papel y la importancia de los tipos de "vecinos" (mujer y hombre). 2) La muerte y el carpintero, que desempeña un papel de "maestro de ceremonias". 3) La muerte diligente y el devenir del ser, el cuerpo, las almas y los cultos asociados. Esa aproximación temática y conceptual proporciona los marcos que permiten dar sentido y coherencia a las prácticas observadas.
