Abstract
Las tradicionales funciones que debe cumplir la ciudad son habitar, trabajar y circular. De éstas, la última reviste una connotación especial, pues, al contrario de las otras, no tiene un asentamiento que de por sí transforme la ciudad. Más bien, circular tiene una dimensión temporal que nos afecta cuando lo necesitamos. Efectivamente, la disposición y localización de la vivienda crea la ciudad formal, crea lugares donde nos desarrollamos como personas, donde socializamos. La localización de los lugares de trabajo afecta su entorno –con mejores o peores efectos sobre éste- y los desplazamientos desde los lugares de habitación. Pero el transporte, aunque indudablemente afecta ese entorno, lo hace en la medida en que ocurre, no permanentemente. El transporte es como la urdimbre de la ciudad: teje hilos por los cuales se desplazan las personas para realizar las demandas que hacen a la ciudad.
