Abstract
En enero de 1853 el coronel Agustín Codazzi, jefe por aquel entonces de la Comisión Corográfica que desde 1850 estaba levantando la carta de la Nueva Granada y verificando algunos otros estudios científicos, se dirigió a la costa atlántica por la via del río Magdalena, siguiendo instrucciones del gobierno, a fin de estudiar varios aspectos de la concesión de privilegio que el mismo gobierno había dado al señor Edward Cullen, en relación con la posibilidad de abrir un canal interoceánico por el istmo de Panamá.
