Abstract
The settlement of mountain areas nearly always takes the form of small population centers shaped in the past by a subsistence economy. In Portugal, the significant changes within mountain settlements, which have occurred with pervasive depopulation many times, include the persistence of habits and building typical of traditional lifestyles, this being particularly noticeable in some villages on the Gralheira massif in the Beira region. This paper is based on the built heritage of this region, focusing on the hamlet of Drave and looking in detail at the characteristics of this nucleus of traditional buildings and of the surrounding landscape. Fundamental tools in this project are architectural survey drawings of this hamlet and a study of the Chronicle of the Martins family of Drave, dated to the middle of the nineteenth century.
