Abstract

Editing a classic involves a series of choices, relating both to form and matter. By comparison with previous commentaries to the Orlando furioso, Emilio Bigi’s work stands out for being unusually rich and exhaustive, especially because of its emphasis on classical sources, which are quoted in full. In line with the commentary, the introduction to the volume aims to recreate Ariosto’s world of ideas as it is depicted in the Furioso (detailing, for example, the gender question and the author’s ambivalent position). Many other features, such as the discussion of textual variants and the volume’s indices are enough to turn this commentary into a true Ariostan encyclopaedia.
