Abstract

Abstract
This study determined the presence of Blastocystis in faeces microscopically and by using
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Samples were collected from hospital Dr. M. Djamil
Padang for a month. All samples were examined for detecting Blastocystis by direct microscopic
examination and PCR. The total number of fecal samples collected was 61. It is found
that 13 (21.3%) of the samples were tested positive for Blastocystis by direct microscopic
examination and 20 (32.8%) were positive by PCR. This study demonstrated that PCR can
detect Blastocystis more sensitive than the direct microscopic examination.
