Abstract
O presente estudo analisa as características clínicas dos casos confirmados de tétano acidental na população de Sergipe/Brasil, entre os anos de 2001 a 2006, bem como descreve as possibilidades terapêuticas da fisioterapia. Por ser uma doença infecciosa aguda, não contagiosa, o tétano acidental, causado pelo Clostridium tetani possui alta morbimortalidade, e dentre os sobreviventes remanescentes com sequelas a maioria necessita dos cuidados fisioterápicos. Verificou-se que a maioria dos pacientes de Sergipe apresenta quadro clínico grave e, quando sobrevivem, apresentam sequelas neuromotoras permanentes, sugerindo que a atuação fisioterapêutica extenda-se além da reabilitação, atuando também na profilaxia.
