Abstract
Ruy Diaz fue el nombre de pila de fray Prudencio de Sandoval sobre cuya limpieza de progenie no han logrado ponerse aún de acuerdo sus biógrafos. Lo cierto es que nació en 1551 o 1652, en Valladolid y murió siendo Obispo de Pamplona, en 1620. De mucho valimiento le sirvió en su vida la no muy desinteresada, aunque sí muy positiva protección de su lejano cognado don Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas, futuro Duque de Lerma, ya que de humilde fraile recoleto en el Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Nájera fue enaltecido a la dignidad episcopal, con sede sucesiva en las Diócesis de Cuenca, Tuy y Pamplona.
