Abstract
O artigo sustenta que a convivência democrática passa pela aceitação de que o politeísmo de valores é inerente à vida social. Argumentamos que o politeísmo de valores não deve ser confundido com o politeísmo religioso, e que todos os sistemas de crenças possuem valores contraditórios e seus conflitos respondem ao drama comum da condição humana e da vida em sociedade. Acreditar que existe um único valor "superior" ao qual todos os outros devem se submeter e se necessário eliminar abre o caminho para o totalitarismo, religioso ou secular.
