Abstract
Al terminar Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo el libro quinto de la primera parte de la Historia General y Natural de las Indias descubrió que le quedaban muchas cosas "raras y peregrinas" que no habían sido utilizadas en la historia de las distintas provincias, y resolvió hacer un libro de depósitos, "porque todo lo que aquí se dirá en suma compete más particularmente a diversas provincias o partes, donde en efecto quedaran puntualmente tales historias". Quería que fueran sabidas y no puestas en olvido.
