Abstract
<p>Este artigo analisa o efeito do princípio de fluxo informacional em duas formas de expressar causalidade no discurso oral: as orações subordinadas introduzidas por "porque" e o sintagma preposicionado "por causa de". A hipótese central é a de que a seqüência de segmentos que expressa causa e efeito é governada pelo mesmo princípio discursivo, isto é, a informação velha precede a informação nova. A análise estatística do estatuto informacional dos segmentos de causa e de efeito confirma a hipótese.</p>
