Entre la valiosa producción científica del General Agustín Codazzi se destacan por su significación en la cartografía americana los "Atlas" de Colombia y Venezuela.
Pueden considerarse como los dos primeros ensayos serios de cartografía realizados durante la era republicana y aventajan, con mucho, tanto por su precisión como por la variedad de las materias en ellos tratadas, a los mapas y planos coloniales.
