Abstract
Colombe Schneck’s L’Increvable Monsieur Schneck and Maryline Desbiolles’s Primo are both concerned with the lacunas in the family story and endeavor to find traces left by anonymous ancestors whose existences have been wiped out by family secrets or by the passage of the time. This paper examines the terms and the limits of the genealogical investigations led by the narrators of Schneck and Desbiolles’ narratives, while paying particular attention to the “rag-picker’s” posture they adopt in their exploration of a familial past of which only vestiges remain.
