Abstract
Doença do neurônio motor, cursa com atrofia muscular progressiva, de evolução rápida (até cinco anos, em média) e inexorável. Há diversas teorias a respeito de sua etiologia, que se acredita ser multifatorial; seu quadro clínico é variável de acordo com o paciente no que concerne sinais, sintomas, gravidade e evolução. O tratamento atual é multidisciplinar e basicamente paliativo, com média ampliação da sobrevida. As perspectivas futuras para o tratamento se depositam nas células-tronco e fatores de crescimento.
