Abstract
<p><strong>RESUMEN.</strong></p><p>El Autor presenta la historia de la psiquiatría en Bucaramanga, departamento de Santander (Colombia) en los últimos treinta y cinco años. Menciona los cambios ocurridos en la práctica del ejercicio de la profesión médica en ese período y en la formación y acreditación de los especialistas psiquiatras. Comenta la fundación del Hospital Psiquiátrico San Camilo de Bucaramanga (1953), la creación de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud (Escuela de Medicina) de la Universidad Industrial de Santander (1967) y el papel que en su génesis tuvieron algunos de los médicos del Hospital Psiquiátrico; la llegada tardía<br />del Instituto de Seguros Sociales a la región, la creación, funcionamiento y desarrollo del Departamento de Psiquiatría de la Universidad Industrial de Santander; los Congresos Nacionales de Psiquiatría realizados en Bucaramanga; los libros y publicaciones de Psiquiatría escritos por los psiquiatras de la región; las actividades de la psiquiatría forense. Y reseña la vida y obra de los tres psiquiatras decanos de la psiquiatría de la provincia santandereana.</p><p><strong>SUMMARY.</strong></p><p>The Author sumarizes the History of Psychiatry in Province of Santander, Colombia, from 1953 to 1999. The foundation of Bucaramanga's Psychiatric Hospital ("Instituto Psiquiátrico San Camilo") , the creation and foundation of the Medical School (Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud) of the Industrial University of Santander (Universidad Industrial de Santander) and his Psychiatric Department; the evolution of psychiatric practice and certification of psychiatrists in Colombia. The Author presents three short biographies of pioneers of Psychiatry in Santander.</p>
