Abstract
Que mejor manera de evocar a la Santafé moribunda y a la Bogotá naciente que a través de la vida y la obra del más ilustre de sus literatos, don José María Vergara y Vergara (1831-1 872). Fundador de la Academia Colombiana de la Lengua, mecenas generoso y amigo el más fiel, de él se decía que se robaba a sí mismo para socorrer a los necesitados. Su fe en la colaboración entre los hombres y su amor a la tierra nativa se reflejan en una de sus mejores páginas, la titulada El último abencerraje, parábola -según don Tomás Rueda Vargas- , del buen sabanero.
