Abstract
Conocí a Juan Friede (1901-1990) a través de las lecturas de los cursos de historia de Colombia que tan sabiamente daba en la Universidad Nacional la profesora Margarita González. Esas primeras referencias acerca de Friede constituyeron toda una revelación, pues, además de proporcionarme enseñanzas sobre temas desconocidos, me abrieron grandes perspectivas, despertaron en mí especiales inquietudes intelectuales y sobre todo me indicaron que ese extranjero que había investigado y escrito sobre los indígenas de manera tan apasionada debía de ser un personaje lleno de historia.
