Abstract
El trabajo investiga aspectos del tamaño urbano de la ciudad de São Paulo y su área metropolitana. La primera sección aborda el crecimiento poblacional y sus dimensiones, apuntando tanto a los niveles absolutos alcanzados como a su dinámica. Considerando que la población se desplaza por razones también económicas, se verifica en la segunda sección la atractividad del área para los negócios, a través del cálculo de indicadores de rentabilidad. En la tercera sección son presentados indicadores comparativos de la calidad de vida, incluyendo crimen, congestionamientos, calidad de vida, polución, etc. La apreciación de esos indicadores, contrastandolos con el movimiento poblacional y de negocios, coloca importantes cuestiones para el futuro del área, asunto de la sección conclusiva del trabajo, en que se discute también la cuestión del financiamiento en la oferta de infraestructura pública
The paper discusses aspects of the urban size of São Paulo city and its metropolitan area. The first section deals with population growth and its dimensions, considering both the absolute values and its dynamic aspects. Since population moves for economic reasons, although not exclusively, the attractiveness of the city for business is considered, through the use of comparative profitability indicators. The third section presents comparative indicators for the quality of life, including crime, congestion, pollution etc. The joint analysis of these indicators with both population and business attractiveness indicators poses important issues for the future of the city. This is dealt with in the final section of the paper, in which aspects of financing public infrastructure are also discussed
