Abstract
Resumo: O presente artigo tem por objetivo discutir a atuação de membros da Companhia de Jesus como médicos e boticários na América meridional durante os séculos XVII e XVIII, levando em consideração aspectos da formação desses missionários e a alta incidência de epidemias nas reduções de indígenas em que atuavam. Para este propósito, nos utilizamos das Cartas Ânuas da Província Jesuítica do Paraguai seiscentistas e setecentistas, das Constituições da Companhia de Jesus, de cartas pessoais do irmão Heinrich Peschke e, também, da Recompilação das Leis e Pragmática do Protomedicato de 1751.

Abstract: The present article intends to discuss the practicing of some members of the Company of Jesus as medics and apothecaries in southern America during the 17th and 18th centuries, taking into account aspects of the formation of these missionaries and the high frequency of epidemic outbreaks in the indigenous reductions they acted in. For this purpose were used the Cartas Ânuas of the Província Jesuítica of Paraguay of the six hundreds and seven hundreds, the Constitutions of the Company of Jesus, the personal letters of brother Heinrich Peschke and also the Recompilation of Laws and Pragmatics of the Protomedicato from 1751.
