Abstract

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF AMAZON AGROFORESTRY RESIDUES FOR USE AS SUBSTRATE

ABSTRACT

In the Amazon are produced annually large quantities of residues, which demand agroforestry research to assess the technical, economic and environmental viability of the agricultural use of these materials as, for example, a substrate for forest seedling production. The objective of this study was to determine physical and chemical properties of the following materials with potential for substrate: peanut husk, rice husk in natura, sawdust semidecomposed, açai residues, cupuassu bark, coffee husk, green coconut husk and bark of brown-of-brazil. Were evaluated total contents of N, K, Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn; besides the pH in water, density, water retention capacity (CRA) and the P/S ratio. The bark of brown-of-brazil presented the highest values for the majority of evaluated characteristics, except for the water retention capacity. The residue that presented the smallest quantities of nutrients or low values of physical characteristics analyzed was the sawdust.
