Abstract
Este trabalho visa contribuir para a reconstrução da história da região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil a partir da Fazenda Água Verde, no município de Coronel José Dias - PI. Há fortes indícios de que a sede dessa fazenda é um exemplo da arquitetura vernácula do século XVII, quando se começou a pecuária extensiva no Sudeste do Estado do Piauí. Ela passou por ciclos alternados de ocupação e abandono, sob a posse de vários indivíduos. Com um quadro teórico e metodológico fundamentado nas informações orais e historiográficas, analisaram-se os dados arqueológicos relacionando-os com a paisagem. Propõe-se, assim, ainda em nível hipotético que a estrutura residencial da atual Fazenda Água Verde seja a mesma que foi edificada por colonizadores portugueses, no século XVII.
