Abstract
El presente trabajo es una revisión de los conceptos actuales que se debaten en el mundo para el desarrollo de las políticas de selección de medicamentos a nivel nacional, local e institucional. Se esbozan las causas que han llevado a la necesidad de establecer estas selecciones, los factores externos e internos que influyen sobre ello, la evolución del concepto de medicamentos esenciales, y la forma que se operacionaliza este concepto para constituir una política de medicamentos esenciales que incluya una selección de fármacos basados en la evidencia.
The present work is a revision of the current concepts discussed around the world with respect to the development of drugs selection policies at a national, local and institutional level. It is outlined the causes leading to the need for the undertaking of these selections, the external and internal factors that bear an influence upon it, the evolution of the concept of essential drugs and the way in which this concept should be implemented in order to create a policy of essential medication that includes drugs selection based on evidence.
