Abstract
Prevalence and intensity of Ascaris lumbricoides infections in an urban population sample (São Paulo, Brazil) Ascaris lumbricoides eggs were searched for in 407 fecal samples (8,87% of the total population) of dwellers in a slum in the City of São Paulo, Brazil. Qualitative and quantitative examinations were performed using, respectively, gravity sedimentation and Kato & Miura thick smears adapted for egg-counts. Epidemiological aspects of ascariasis in urban and rural areas, inferred from the results of this investigation and data in the literature referred to, are discussed. The importance of quantitative stool examinations in Epidemiology is stressed.
