Abstract
Although Liolaemus is the second most diversified vertebrate genus in South America, studies on spatial distribution and space use are scarce. We studied the home range of Liolaemus koslowskyi in northwest La Rioja, Argentina, comparing males and females, between two consecutive years and determining the relationship between snout-vent length and home range size. We built a grid of 70 m x 50 m, subdivided in squares of 5 m. The individuals were captured, sexed, measured and marked, and then they were liberated at the collection site. We followed marked individuals during two activity periods (September to April). The proportion of sexes was of 1:1 and stayed constant during the two years of work. Twenty-eight different home ranges were determined in the working area during the first year and 26 during the second year. The average home range size for males was 140.43 ± 140.71 m2, and 40.70 ± 39.38 m2for females. Male home ranges were, on average, 3.5 times bigger than female home ranges. Average distance that the lizards moved was significantly greater in males than in females. A positive significant relationship was found between snout-vent-length and home range size in males but not in females. There was no relationship between movement distance and body size.
