Abstract
<p>Se citan argumentos de la literatura nacional y de la práctica diaria según los cuales es patente que en Colombia se está abusando del diagnóstico de amibiasis, como salida fácil para tratar de solucionar los más variados problemas clínicos, tanto de la pediatría como de la medicina general. Los orígenes del abuso son, por una parte la real alta prevalencia de la parasitosis en Colombia, pero por sobre todo, el considerar enfermedad a la condición<br />de portador, agravado por la circunstancia de ser evidente que hay fallas importantes en el entrenamiento de personal de laboratorio clínico para distinguir con razonable certeza la Entamoeba histolítica patógena, de otras especies no invasoras.</p><p>El abuso tiene especial gravedad en el niño pequeño, quien, como consecuencia de él, es objeto de tratamientos agresivos y deja de recibir el manejo médico o quirúrgico que sí es adecuado. Se sugieren una serie de medidas educativas y técnicas para contrarrestar este problema.</p>
