Abstract
This article reviews the different methods that con be used to identify the leading petroleum pollutants of the sea by quantitative analysis of their a passive markers » (sulfur, nitrogen, nickel, vanadium, paraffin, asphaltenes) and by determining other intrinsic properties. These methods are chemical, spectroscopic (infrared, ultraviolet) and chromatographic (high-resolution gas chromatography with flame ionization detection, flame photometry and electron capture). Measurements were made of a great variety of products capable of polluting the Spanish Mediterranean coast, including - crude cil from the Amposta and Castellon offshore fields; - imported crudes processed in coastal refineries (Boscan, Es Sider, Kuwait, Arabian light, ... - heavy fractions from refineries (fuel cils, asphalts, lubricants); - actual pollutants; - samples artificially altered in the laboratory to analyze the graduat action of natural elements. The most interesting methods were found to be : - chemical fitration for sulfur, nickel and vanadium.
