The purpose of our article is to highlight some of the pages of the life and career of professor of department of the Russian history of Novorossiysky University A. I. Markevich (1848-1903). The main objective of our article - to describe process of writing and the maintenance of a historical note to the 25th anniversary of the youngest, at that time, university of the country - Novorossiysky University. The book is written with extensive use of official documentary sources – protocols of meetings of university and university affairs. Also data of private character were sources for writing. In the first part of the book the history of transformation of the Odessa Rishelyevsky lyceum to university is described, the second part is devoted to a systematic review of history of departments and various divisions of university, scientific communities and the student's environment. It is possible to emphasize the author's contribution to studying of history of university. In the article also examines the biography of A. I. Markevich, in particular, his research and teaching activities. A. I. Markevich was the member and the active participant of various educational, charitable societies and establishments. The main finding of the work is illumination of historical value of work of A. I. Markevich "The twenty-fifth anniversary of Novorossiysky University" which is actual and today in connection with 150-th anniversary of the Odessa University. The research findings have the practical value for historians, teachers and all by that who is interested in history of the Odessa University.
