Abstract
En la última década, se han incrementado en América Latina, las investigaciones e informes referidos al profesorado. La acumulación de estudios y evidencia empírica ha puesto de manifiesto la importancia que el desempeño de los docentes tiene en el aprendizaje de sus estudiantes. La profesión docente en América Latina no logra retener a los buenos maestros y profesores. Entre los dilemas centrales a resolver se encuentra la formación inicial del profesorado que, según uno de los postulados de la autora, no puede examinarse aisladamente sino que deber analizarse a la luz de una amplia gama de factores que definen a la profesión docente en América Latina. Mientras es posible suponer que en algunos países la mejora de la formación inicial del profesorado es factible cuando existe decisión política, la situación en otros casos es más compleja y requiere elevar el prestigio social de los docentes propiciando mejores oportunidades de carrera docente y mayores incentivos económicos y simbólicos.

In the last decades, research and reports have in Latin America placed teachers at the very center of analysis and diagnosis. Empirical evidence and studies have stressed once and again the important effect of teacher performance on student learning. The teaching career in Latin America is no longer able to retain good teachers. At the crux of the problem is the nature of initial teacher training which, as the author states, cannot be understood in isolation from a broad array of factors that define the profession in Latin America. While in some cases reverting this situation is merely a question of political decision, in other cases it requires explicit policies of promoting teacher prestige to improve career opportunities and incentives, both economic and symbolic.
