Resumo: A busca pela modernidade tornou-se moeda corrente entre as elites letradas da Bahia na passagem do século XIX para o XX. O desejo era situá-la entre as cidades de importância no cenário nacional, livrando-a de uma imagem ligada a um tempo atrasado e refratário ao que então se entendia por progresso. Imagem, por sua vez, muito devedora das impressões deixadas pelos diversos viajantes estrangeiros que por lá passaram ao longo do Oitocentos e que colaboraram para forjar uma identidade mais próxima da Costa d’África que do Brasil. Busca-se compreender como se deu a construção dessa imagem de terra “avessa à civilização”, com a qual a Bahia era identificada em princípios do século XX, a partir da análise das representações efetuadas por uma vasta literatura de viajantes que por lá estiveram ao longo de todo o século XIX e que deixaram em seus relatos diferentes apreciações da população local, sobretudo, de sua parcela negra.

Abstract: The search for modernity became common among the educated elites of Bahia State from the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. The desire was to place it between the important towns on the national scenery, ridding it of an image linked to a delayed and refractory time to what then was meant by progress. Image, in turn, much in debt to impressions left by the various foreign travelers who passed through during the Nineteenth Century and helped the forging of an identity closer to the coast of Africa than Brazil. As we try to understand how was built the image of the land “adverse to civilization” with which Bahia was identified in the early Twentieth Century from the analysis of the representations made by a vast literature of the travelers that were in Bahia throughout the Nineteenth Century. In this literature, different assessments were shown in their statements on the local population, mainly about the black population.
