Abstract

Cohesion, a concept that refers to both a group work to reach common objectives and to the interpersonal attraction between the members of a team, is an important applied concept due to its influence on performance. Although questionnaires have been widely used as a measure of team cohesion, they do not show the way in which individuals relate to each other, if subgroups are formed or if some members of the group are socially isolated. In the present study sociograms have been used to analyze internal cohesion of a soccer club. Seventeen players from an University soccer club answered 8 questions aimed to establish the cohesion degree and internal structure of the group through the displays of attraction or rejection of their members. Results obtained indicate that team cohesion was very high, with a low polarization, both in positive or negative aspects, related to the presence of subgroups that could alter its functioning. Information obtained may be extremely useful for a coach work.
