Abstract
The sources (manuscripts and prints from 1785 to 2005) from various French archives include several types of detailed, large-scale maps that provide a satisfactory reconstitution of the development of the lower Orne valley (Calvados). A critical analysis of each map shows up three key characteristics of that development. Current issues relating to nature conservation are also stressed, and many correlations are found between physical factors and the economic activities.
