The article aims at making a contribution to the issue of memory in the dimension of psychic dynamics, based on the logic of Freudian thought. We carried out a re-reading of Letter 52, in which we distinguish psychic impressions - memory traces and the "fueros" - generated in accordance to the ego's ability to dominate or not the amount of excitation. Memory traces are constituted in the sphere of the pleasure principle whereas the "fueros" indicate a literal memory that is not under the guidelines of that principle. This finding sets a limit to the prevalence of the pleasure principle and the concept of representation itself. In this perspective we can conceive of the psyche in a broad way, since the representation is not the only way of expression in the psychic apparatus.
