Abstract
La novela hispanoamericana de mediados del siglo XX tiene uno de sus contextos importantes en el impacto cultural de las corrientes existencialistas europeas, tanto filosóficas como literarias. La narrativa de Juan Carlos Onetti es un brillante ejemplo de esta situación. A través de sus personajes, el narrador uruguayo desarrolla una personal teoría de la desesperación, que fundamenta su poética The cultural impact of European philosophical and cultural existentialist currents is one of the major contexts of the mid-nineteenth century Spanish American novel. Juan Carlos Onetti's is a brilliant example of this situation. Through his characters, the Uruguayan narrator develops a personal theory of desperation, which is the basis for his poetics.
